Zanzibar organic spice farmers association is an NGO based in Zanzibar, established in 2006 and registered in 2008 as a legal NGO.
The association' main objectives are:-
a. Exchange ideas between members who are also spice farm owners
b. To seek knowledge concerning spice farm cultivation
c. To reduce poverty through spice farm cultivation
The association has a total of 22 farmers with 6 farms each having a three acre area. Ten out of the 22 members are females.
Progress
Since its establishment, the Zanzibar Organic Farmers association has been able to receive training through PADEP and OFA (Organic Farmers Association). Among other trainings the association members have learned about organic spice cultivation, record keeping, processing and packaging of spice products and marketing skills.
Main Activities of the Association
The main activities of Zanzibar Spice farmers are: -
a. Production of spice products
b. Processing of spice products
c. Marketing of spice products
d. Tourist attraction
Zanzibar Organic Farmers produce all type of spices, however the main spices are cloves, cinnamon, cardamon, lemon grass, turmeric, black pepper and nutmeg. The spice products produced are mainly sold to the Zanzibar main market and from tourists who frequently visit the farms.
