WOFATA was officially registered by the Government of Tanzania, under the Ministery of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, on November 20th 2002. Women living with HIV/AIDS decided to form WOFATA with the aim of helping those affected by the illness. The formation of WOFATA was a response to the President of the Republic of Tanzania, Mr Benjamin Mkapa's call for all Tanzanians to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country.

WOFATA Mtumba constantly faces financial instabilities as the organisation relies purely on grants and individual donations. Often members use money from their own pockets to fund their projects and give support to fellow members during hard times. Despite the lack of funding WOFATA Mtumba successfully have;

• Provided counselling to HIV/AIDS infected clients.
• Trained youth to enable them to educate the public.
• Encouraged PLHAS (People living with HIV/AIDS) not to be afraid to speak out.
• Helped orphans secure education.
• Provided necessities to PLHAS such as food and ARVS.
• Enabled over 21 HIV/AIDS widows to enforce their rights within their families thus helping them to overcome the hindrance caused by the stigma they face after the death of their husbands.

Wofata alikuwa rasmi na Serikali ya Tanzania, chini ya Wizara ya Katiba na Sheria, juu ya Novemba 20, 2002. Ni iliundwa kama kuna haja ya kusaidia wanawake na watoto wanaoishi na VVU / UKIMWI kutokana na matatizo yao katika jamii. NGO hii inajitahidi kwa zaidi ujao bure, unyanyapaa na wenye uwiano wa kijinsia mazingira, ili kuhamasisha plwhas (watu wanaoishi na VVU / UKIMWI) na watu walioathirika na janga la kushiriki katika sababu.
