Sustainable Watch on Marginal Communities (SMC) is a non profit and non political organization which was established in 2010 and obtained a status of legal institution as a local NGO in 2012 with Registration NO. 00NGO00005226 and its headquarters is in Ilemela Mwanza Tanzania. SMC draws its memberships from any legally instituted local, national or international organizations and individuals subscribing to the objectives and functions of the organization.
SMC was founded by 10 individuals with the aim of complementing and supplementing efforts of the government in bringing better life to its citizens since no single state could fully represent the diverse interests and needs of the society, by carrying out grassroots activities which promote the public to participate in decision making that determine their collective destiny.
ORGANIZATION STRUCTURE
SMC is led by the Annual General Meeting, which is the supreme decision making organ. Members of this organ are all members of the organization.
The other organs are the Executive Committee, Board of Directors and Technical Advisors of the Organization. Leaders of this organization come through democratic elections.
SMC OBJECTIVES
- To promote diversified poverty alleviation initiatives and income generating activities at the local level
- To enhance participatory planning at all levels and promote community driven development
- To contribute to fight against HIV/AIDS pandemic and its negative effects among the community
- To promote increased participation of the marginalized and vulnerable groups in sustainable development
- To promote solar energy so as to control excessive use of firewood and charcoal which contributes to an increase of Green House Gases (GHG) in the atmosphere
- To discourage cultural and normal behaviors which are unfriendly to environmental and solid management
- Gathering and dissemination of information on key social economic issues in the country
- To promote improvement in food security in the country through transformation and modernization of agriculture among the youths in rural areas
- To establish strong networking relationship with relevant institution in the country
- To enhance civil society organizations, private sector, government and public at large in accelerating pro-poor growth.
- To build institutional capacity of SMC to enable them implement activities and promote sustainable use and management of the resources
- Lobbying and advocating favorable policies and community participation on issues that affect their collective destiny
- To apply to any governments, authorities, public bodies, corporations, companies, persons for and to accept any moveable or immovable property, donations, gift subscriptions and other assistance with a view to promoting organization objectives
- To enter into agreements with any governments, organizations or authorities that may be of the benefit to the organization objectives
