Traditional House

NANSI THE CHAGGA HOUSE

The Chagga house is a warm and very comfortable house. The house is made of local treated wooden frames and dry banana leaves. Te house accommodates family members and their livestock who mutually live together. Exceptionally it is sound proof and with no echo. When it rains it rains, there is always sound detected when within the house. Never will rain drip into the house. When going into the house from outside, the first to meet are the livestock. Nansi is highly ventilated though there are no windows. The house therefore does not smell smoke livestock.

Sieny Tour Program 5 to 7 hours

The tour program starts from the Machame Nkweshoo Cultural Tourism Program office and takes you through Kalali local market to Masama Ngira. Sieny is famous for its catchment forest which is historically known as a sacred place of worship where local people worshiped during the traditional events. Another attraction is the natural bridge of God which called in Kiswahili as ‘Daraja la Mungu’. Sieny caves has one thing strange, it keep changing colors and each color has its meaning according local traditional elders. Local people used to go there are beg from the dead the grinding stones. They also used the caves to hide during tribal war. The cave can accommodate about 800 people at once.

Kijiji walk

This is a very excite walk in the traditionally setting Chagga village. You will walk in narrow paths “vichochoro’ across the banana and coffee sambas. You will also get an opportunity to pass by Chagga homesteads, local brew ‘mbege’ clubs, shops ‘dukas and genges’.  In you walk; you meet Chagga people who will give you warm smiles and greetings! The children will accompany their greetings with ‘Good morning teacher!’ regardless of your profession and the time of the day!

Income generated by 100% remains to the community by paying all sorts of operational costs such as tour guiding fees, coordination fees, contact person’s fees, supporting community development projects (water, health, education, ecological restoration & environmental conservation) and training of local service providers.

Tours and Packages

PACKAGE A: Cultural Half day Trip to Chagga village and a village walk:

A welcome to a Chagga village is guaranteed. You will spend time within a Chagga family at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Get to know various tools used by the tribe in collection within our Chagga Village Cultural Museum with a lot of old tools and coins used in ancient times.  Your tour will proceed to the coffee farms to know how coffee is produced locally and then hike to the waterfalls. On the way one will get an opportunity to interact with local people.

Package Price:Tshs 55,000/=Per Person

PACKAGE B: Cultural Full day Trip to Chagga village including lunch and village walk:

You will spend your day in a Chagga village at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro near Machame route for climbing to the roof of Africa famously known aswhisky route’. Chagga Museum with a lot of old tools and coins used in ancient times will give you a picture of what the past looked like on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. After an insight of traditional coffee production then you will enjoy a traditional lunch at Chagga home before your afternoon walking to the waterfalls and learn how local people are struggling with environmental conservation to reduce carbon in our atmosphere.

PACKAGE C: With Home-stay/camping overnight: Cultural Full day Trip to Chagga village full board and village walk:

You will spend your day and night in a Chagga village after visiting our Chagga Village Cultural Museum. An opportunity to participate in the daily family chores of Chagga family is guaranteed to our beloved visitors. You will get an opportunity learn about traditional organic agricultural practices on coffee and banana farms mixed with small gardens of vegetables and fruits.  Together with walking activities to the waterfalls and traditional hiding caves used by Chaggas during inter-tribal wars with Maasai warriors. One will get an opportunity to visit local markets (on Mondays and Thursdays) buy some stuff and l earn how to prepare a number of traditional African cuisines and enjoy them during your lunch and dinner.  A visit to our tree planting initiative will wind up your trip in the next morning.

PACKAGE D: With Home-stay/camping 2nights: Cultural Full 2days Trip to Chagga village and village walk:

Day one will be spent in the visit of the underground tunnels dwelled a long time ago where Chagga people used to hide from the local /traditional wars. This is after the welcome to the traditional museums where our visitors will experience some of the Chagga traditional tools and old currencies. One will get an opportunity to visit natural waterfalls, a trip of about 3 hours after lunch which will be accompanied by the traditional chagga dance. During the evening hours visitors will be invited to participate in the preparation of the local chagga dinner if they wish.

Day two will be spent by our visitors in the visit of the local market where one can enjoy the traditional Chagga stuffs. The trip also will include a visit of the first church and see the memorial stone which depicts the landmark of the first missionary tour in the Chagga land.

During the evening hours the visitors will be invited to prepare local coffee and sometimes they can visit a nearby local brew bar,( mbege) where they can learn how it is prepared. This also can go together with the learning of the Chagga relics, stories and others.

PACKAGE  E: With Home-stay/camping 3nights: Cultural Full 3days Trip to Chagga village and village walk:

Extras

The visitors will get opportunity to participate in the undertaking / projects visit, of a nearby primary school and   interact with the pupils as well as their teachers so as to share the experience, visit  a nearby dispensary and the community library which is under construction  .

The gardening will be communicated later as for now there are very small garden for families wish that may suffice but we know how to handle that with you.

Bee keeping is also done at a very small scale basically is also very personal but again you will find something to share.

So the programme is very open for you to choose and always we will find a meeting point together

Nkweshoo village Biking Tour

(From –Machame – Nkweshoo Cultural Tourism office to village forest) – 2hours

The biking experience starts from our office with professional biking guide, you will ride around the village criss-crossing banana and coffee farms to the beautiful community forest, where you will be able to enjoy the forest, natural vegetations around and off-course interact with the local people. A chance to explore various plants with medicinal value and melodious birds singing in the forest is guaranteed.

 

Kili biking tour

(From Machame – Nkweshoo Cultural Tourism office to Kilimanjaro National Park Machame gate) – 3hours

On your mountain bike, take a ride from our office led by our professional biking guide to Kilimanjaro National Park (machame gate) on route you will be able to see coffee and banana plantations. At the gate, you will be received by marvelous natural forest around the gate and have very fresh breath. Also, see different activities done before climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. On your way back you will enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro and its low land around..

Kalali Market Biking Tour 

(From Machame-Nkweshoo Cultural Tourism office to kalali local market)-4hours

Get unforgettable experience of the kalali market. A biking tour to local community market, this will be on Mondays and Thursdays (market days). This will give you an exception experience to see and learn how the machame people live, see fantastic and attractive different products, whereby some are locally made, eat and interact with local people.

 

The Oldest church biking tour

(From machame Nkweshoo Cultural Tourism office to oldest church) – 5hours.

This is the best opportunity for you to visit places where first German Missionary to Machame area visited many years ago and built the first church. Explore some of the remaining memorial stones some put in place by Mr. Johannes Rebmann who came to Machame around 1840s where they built the first church in the area.  Get an insight on how these missionaries worked to expand the missionary tasks in other parts of Kilimanjaro and the rest of Tanzania.  Take a round walk to explore the whole route of the missionaries in the area and enjoy the scenery, people and various old building.

Weruweru river biking tour

 (From machame Nkweshoo Cultural Tourism to Weruweru river)-2hours

A tour starts from our office you will be guided by our professional guide on route you will see coffee and banana plantations. At the river you will see river capture between Weruweru River and Waramu River also, you may enjoy swimming in fresh water from the beautiful waterfalls.

A Visit to Local Brew Makers, 3 hour tour

Visiting brewing site where a local drink ‘mmbege’ is brewed. Locally , all procedures for brewing are practised. The raw materials and utensils used being very local and yet ‘a sweet wine ‘ is prepared. Welcome for tasting if not drinking. You can take part preparing the brew ingredients.

Batic and Weaving

While enjoying GOD’S miseries on chaggaland, you will be allowed to participate in local art of batic processing using local procedures: And traditional weaving by using locally available resources, such as Banana fibles.

Traditional Dance

When enjoying a palatable luncheon, you may forget to chew since you will also be enjoying an exciting traditional dance. Amazingly, you will notice that various dances have specific meanings. You are invited to join the dances.


Environmental conservation initiative

Get a glimpse of how the locals conserve their beautiful environment. The guide will explain how the conservation activities such as rainwater harvesting undertaken in the area are ideal for a rural setting. All visitors who visit us will get involved in tree planting activities for at least one or two trees and hence become part of our conservation project. This starts with a short walk to the tree nursery owned by Machame-Rural Action Women Group that is responsible for making Kilimanjaro and the world at large a nice place to live.
