UWABA Dar es Salaam Cycling Community welcomes volunteers to work on any or all of our projects including:

  • advocacy work with Government institutions to improve cycling conditions in Dar es Salaam;
  • cycle safety education in schools and community;
  • helping to develop Fasta Cycle Messengers Cooperative;
  • refurbishing/repairing bicycles and teaching bicycle repair skills.

UWABA also welcomes volunteers with new ideas about promoting cycling in Dar es Salaam and improving conditions for cyclists in Dar es Salaam.

Volunteers should meet the following criteria:

  • be willing to work without any payment, or source funding themselves for their volunteer work expenses;
  • be willing to use a bicycle as their regular means of transport in Dar es Salaam;
  • be willing to work respectfully and appreciatively with people from different backgrounds and of different formal education levels.

Useful skills of volunteers: although particular skills are not required, the following skills are very welcome:

  • bicycle repair skills;
  • basic computer skills;
  • knowledge of English, Swahili or preferably both;
  • academic background or experience in urban planning, road engineering, mapping, photography/video, small business development (for Fasta Cycle Messengers), teaching/training facilitation;
  • good at leading and motivating groups of other volunteers.

UWABA can provide the following to volunteers:

  • orientation and practical help on living in Dar es Salaam, if volunteer coming from outside Dar es Salaam;
  • active daily support from UWABA members to implement your project/idea/research if in line with UWABA's overall aims and philosophy;
  • advice and guidance from UWABA leaders;
  • written report on your volunteer work and achievements with UWABA from UWABA leaders.
