Nationally KIMWAM is working under Mazingira Network (MANET) to advocate on 6 issues.

Increased transparency in fishing sector and enhance fair distribution of revenue between authority and the coastal villages.

Empowered local authorities (Beach Management Units): in terms of registration, tax collection and management of coastal and marine resources.

Increased Support to small scale fishing sector by providing subside for fishing gears and access to financial sources. E.g. support establishment of Village Community Banks.

Policy change to regulate fast growing Mari-culture industry.

Increased support to small scale fish farmers by establishing fingerling centres, farmer fisher schools and facilitate market accessibility.

Increased efforts and measures against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing

Programs/projects

KIMWAM currently is running the following programmes/projects

 KIMWAM-Living Sea-Fisherman to Fisherman project  aimed to improve the living conditions of the Fisher communities in Mtwara district by developing renewable and ecologically responsible fishing in the area. The project involved also the raising capacity carried out through visits from Danish Fishery Specialists  and biologists. The project also supported women's roles (Women Fish Mongers-MAMASAMAKI Group) withing the handling and sale of fish that planned to experiment with spreading fishing initiatives in the area that aimed to make fishing more renewable and ecological responsible.

A further important objective was to organiza fishers in the region on several levels, so they can better exercise their own rights. Through this initiative, the New Local Fishery association has been established that involves small member groups from differents Fishing villages in Mtwara district.  On the left are the Fishery Sccociation Members helding the meeting. The partnership project is for minimum of 10 years (2012-2022).


Establishment of a 14km2 community marine conservation area within the islands of Namponda, Membelwa and Kisiwa Kidogo in Mnazi Bay Ruvuma Estuary in exchange for support for an education and awareness program, construction of a community resource center and support for alternative livelihood options for a minimum period of 10 years (2012-2022). To enhance community based coastal resources management and sustainable development in Mtwara coastal areas. The project was funded by Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) for the duration of 5 years through funding from Seacology (2007 – 2010).

Support to small scale fishing groups in Mtwara region to acquire improved fishing gears. This program was implemented through funding from SwissAid Tanzania (2004 – 2010).

 

Support establishment of village community Banks (VICOBA). This program was implemented in partnership with World Wild Fund (WWF) 2008 – 2011.

 

Advocacy for participatory coastal resources management and sustainable livelihood project funded by WWF Tanzania and the Foundation for Civil Society (FCS) from 2009 - 2011.

 

Support Sustainable Milkfish farming as Cost -Effective methods to increase Food supply, Incomes and Employment in Mtwara Coastal Communities. This project was implemented in partnership with Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) and Institute of Marine Science (IMS) of University of Dar es salaam in 2008-2011.

 

Support income generating Activities including, small livestock keeping and jewels making from oysters and coconuts.

  1. Utoaji wa huduma muhimu kwa watoto walio katika mazingira magumu katika kata 15 wa halmashauri ya Mtwara Mikindani manispaa. Mradi huu unatekelezwa kwa kushirikiana na PACT Tanzania na Mtwara Mikindani Halmashauri ya Manispaa na kufadhiliwa na USAID 2008-2014. Zaidi ya 1,000 mazingira magumu na watoto 750 takers huduma ni kunufaika moja kwa moja na mradi huo. Huduma za mikononi pamoja na mahitaji ya msingi ya watoto kama vile vifaa vya shule, kadi za CHF, na kufundwa mapato ya shughuli za uzalishaji mapato endelevu kwa ajili ya takers familia na huduma. vulunteers jamii Kuhusu 120 ni kushiriki katika siku hadi siku msaada na huduma kwa watoto.
  2. Mtwara kijamii rasilimali za pwani na mradi wa usimamizi endelevu wa maisha. mradi huu unatekelezwa kwa kushirikiana na Serikali za mitaa ni pamoja na Serikali ya kijiji. Mradi huo unafadhiliwa na Sweden kwa ajili ya Nature Conservation Society (SSNC), muda ni miaka 5 2007-2011 pamoja na uwezekano wa kupanua ushirikiano.
  3. Msaada kwa Grassroots shirika mkoani Mtwara. Unafadhiliwa na Tanzania swissAid. Muda mpango ina kuwepo kwa zaidi ya miaka 17 na ushirikiano wa kufanywa upya na itaendelea 2013.
  4. Utetezi kwa ajili ya usimamizi shirikishi wa rasilimali za pwani na mradi endelevu maisha inayofadhiliwa na WWF kwa Nature Tanzania Programu ya Ofisi 2,009-2,011.
  5. Endelevu Milkfish kilimo; gharama nafuu mbinu ya kuongeza upatikanaji wa chakula, mapato na Ajira katika mikoa ya Mtwara Jumuiya ya Pwani. Mradi huu unatekelezwa kwa kushirikiana na Magharibi ya Bahari ya Hindi chama Marine wanasayansi (WIOMSA) na Taasisi ya Sayansi ya Bahari (IMs) ya Chuo Kikuu cha Dar es salaam. Mradi huo unafadhiliwa na RecoMap kwa kipindi cha muda wa miaka 4 fromm 2008-2011.
