The project goal is: To reduce, possibly even halt, the rate of deforestation through market demand for hollow core briquettes which will be used and potentially sold in direct competition to wood and charcoal. Hollow core biomass briquettes are made of grass, leaves, charcoal fines, rick husks, paper etc. etc. The type of materials depends on the biomass available in an area. After preparation/fermentation, the materials are pressed in small hollow core briquettes that are dried thoroughly and then used as fuel in place of fire wood or charcoal. There are 10 active biomass briquette projects now in the Tanzania Biomass Producers Network. The focus is on both training of trainers and training of producers in biomass briquette production. Each group in the network is at a different stage of development with some able to provide training to new producers, while others are just getting started in their own production. But the network is growing! |
