AFRICAN FAMILY ACTION PLAN (AFAP)

.

INTRODUCTIONTO THE ORGANIZATION:

AFRICAN FAMILY ACTION PLAN (AFAP) IS A Non-governmental and non-for-profit organization that was established in 2004 and formally registered in February 2009.The organization was established in response to the families for primary health care services and environmental conservation, education, human right, research and economic strengthening in Tanzania. The AFAP was started as small initiative with 5 volunteers using their homes as the space of organizing their activities and program. Currently the organization has more than 25 men and women who working as volunteers who are provide voluntary primary health care education,Documentation,dissemination of legal and human right education,HIV/AIDS, and Drug abuse      Education, capacity building for community on government expenditure tracking (PET),motivating provision of safe and clean water to school and villages and provision of better latrines, providing of first Aid education to the community and also they providing sexual reproductive health services among youth and women in Tanzania.

THE TARGERT BENEFICIERIES GROUP:

The AFAP’s beneficiaries target population includes AFRICAN FAMILY ACTION PLAN, Youth, women and children.

LOCATION:

AFAP.S Office is in ILALA Municipality of Dar es salaam, Kipawa, Karakata (Mji mpya).Bukuru Street Plot NO.1556.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION.

The activities and programs of the AFAP are strategically directed towards all regions of the Tanzania mainland. The organizations currently working in two regions, Dar es Salaam and coast but we expect to expand our activities and programs in Dodoma,Lindi,Singida,Iringa and Tanga

THE ORGANIZATION VISSION:

To have a society in which families have access to quality health care services, access to quality education, human right and economic strengthening.

 

 

THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF AFAP.

The main objective of AFAP is to improve the performance level of families in health care services, human right, and education and economical to enable them to improve their standard of file.

The AFAP’s over all goals as stipulated in its vision statement is being accomplished through five main programs each of which contributes forwards achieving our aspiration (vision)as follows:;

HEALTH PROGRAM

Under this program the AFAP engaged in the following services;-

  • Ø  Provision sexual reproductive health education and accurate and timely information that leads to expand knowledge on sexual and reproductive health issues to women and youth.
  • Ø  Provision of HIV/AIDS and DRUG ABUSE education to the families especially youth in and out of school and establishing counseling and treatment centre.
  • Ø  Advocating and promoting for quality policies environment in achieving quality sexual and Reproductive health for women and youth.
  • Ø  Promoting for better learning environment school heath, hygiene and provision of better latrines, building and running heath centre, dispensary and Hospital in poor communities.
  • Ø  Provision of environment conservation and nutrition education in the families.
  • Ø  Provision of voluntary primary care education and improve access to health information and facilities among urban and rural poor families.

 

ECONOMIC PROGRAM

Our work in this area targeted;-

  • Ø  Provision of training and work shop in order to impact skills that will enable women, youth and poor families to better cope with the  social and economic situation.
  • Ø  Provision of financial and non-financial services to low income families in sustainable and better quality manner to contribute in improving their standard of file.
  • Ø  Developing and implementing intervention strategies such as income generation activities to alleviate poverty and decrease the needs for women and youth to engage in risky behaviors.
  • Ø  Provision of employment of the youth and women though solid waste management.
  • Ø  To improve entrepreneurship and business management skills among rural and urban families.

 

             EDUCATION PROGRAM

Our work in this area is targeted to;-

  • Ø  Cooperate with nursery school, primary school, secondary school and high education institutions for the purpose of propagating knowledge to the children and youth in Tanzania.
  • Ø  Provision of school facilities assistance to orphan, vulnerable children and disable such as school fees, fares, unforms and others school materials.
  • Ø  Provision of school facilities such as building equipments, desks and all other necessary assistance which will help to bright a positive chance in education sectors.
  • Ø  Building and running school in order to providing education services to the poor community especially orphan, vulnerable children and youth.

HUMAN RIGHT PROGRAM.

Our work in this area is;-

  • Ø  To provide in all parts of Tanzania with easy access to information and knowledge resources regarding human right and good govemence education
  • Ø  Increasing youth and women participation in planning decision making and good governance from local government to nation level.
  • Ø  Sensitizing grassroots communities on issues effecting them socially, economically, culturally and politically
  • Ø  Creating feedback mechanisms that encourages families to discuss and debate key issues including reforms in the health and development sectors, such process enable Tanzanian families to influence Nation policy and help women and youth who are its clients to meet their expectation.
  • Ø  Documentation and dissemination of legal and human right education
  • Ø  Capacity building for community on government expenditure tracking.(PET)
  • Ø  To help care and advocate orphan and vulnerable children and provision of education on children right and fight children labour to the society.

            REARSECH PROGRAM.

Under this program AFAP engaged in provision of:-

  • Ø  Specific research focusing on the problem effecting the community
  • Ø  Research on specific identified socio-economic problems.
  • Ø  As a part of research development more focuses is placed on operation research and is concerned with day to day operation program.

VOLUNTEERS TRAINING PROGRAM.

Developing a volunteer’s team working for those suffering the most from poverty, diseases and           ignorance in the community. 

v  One of work of AFAP is to developing volunteers who will be ready to join any team in any team at any place where the organization is present (working), these volunteers commit to a life with revenues or without revenues.

v  Becoming volunteer is a choice proposed to those who wish to commit in the long term with the poorest families and who share the potion and values of the AFAP.

v  We wish to offer this possibility to other Tanzanians, proposing them, not a job but the free choice to commit their life in a work with those suffering the most from poverty, ignorance and diseases.

  • §  AFAP is a legally registered and independent institution.
  • §  AFAP has a strong constitution that guides its managements.
  • §  It has managements and information systems personnel polices and procedures.
  • §  AFA[P has a Board of Director with Expertise and Experience in all areas like human right, financial management, health etc.
  • §  AFAP has gained popularity in Tanzania during its six years of Existence.
  • §  AFAP has good relationship with the government at all levels
  • §  AFAP has a pool of Committed Women and youth volunteers.
  • §  AFAP has an office in Dar es Salaam for which it operates.
  • §  AFAP targeting to  create a net work of women, youth and children all over the country.

                  THE ORGANIZATION’S OF WEAKNESS.

  • §  In adequate skilled personnel to various position in its structure.
  • §  Lack of resources to implement various organization project and programs.
  • §  Volunteers in search of paying professional positions often leave the AFAP.
  • §  Lack of research and Advocacy strategy to ensure achievements.

In adequate ability to communicate with national and international partners.

                                THREATES TO THE ORGANIZATION:

  • §  Unfavorable donor priorities in funding initiatives for local organization.
  • §  Political will may be hampered by the growing fear of politicians.
  • §  Some provision of the NGO act is not favorable for NGO’S
  • §  Growing fear, suspicion and mistrust between the government and NGOS.
  • §  The growing poverty level and corrupt practices in Tanzania.
  • §  In adequate outlet for women-friendly health throughout the country.

 

 

 

ANNUALY GENERAL MEETING.

The annual General meeting is the highest decision making body of the organization. The annual General Meeting involves all member of the organization, including Board members the organization’s staff and the organization’s target beneficiaries.  The annual General meeting review and approves the summary operation and financial report of organization, including the Audit report from the previous fiscal year.

THE MANAGEMENT TEAM.

The organization has a Management team which guides the daily implementation of the organization’s activities and programs. The Management proposes and prepared rules, amendment of various rules and the constitution as well as a code of conduct and by-laws and it present them to the general, meeting for it’s approved. The management team also prepares yearly operation and financial plan and reports carries out directives of the Board of Director and the annual general meeting and co-ordinates and direct activities of various section of the AFAP.Tthe organization has four women members on the Managements team.

STAFF VOLUNTEERS.

The AFAP has staff volunteers who work on women youth and children right outreach education and services in the community. They are selected on the basis of their background on women, children and youth’s issues and their willingness to work voluntarily for the organization’s activities and programs.

THE BOARD OF DIRECTOR.

The AFAP has Board of director which provides the organization direction to achieve its vision except for the Executive Director of AFAP.The rest of the Board members have with significant public or private position Tanzania working for the improvement of target’s right and de3velopment in Tanzania. EMPLEMENTED ACTIVITIES.

The AFAP in collaboration with other stake holders has engaged in several activities related to women, children and youth rights, primary health care and sexual exploitation of young girls in Tanzania.

The following significant milestones have been achieved.

  • The organization has recruited and trained two qualified full time and two part time, Women and youth volunteers who perform activities related to the Education, Health and Economic Development of families in Tanzania.
  • Its volunteers have acquired training in peer Education,women,youth and children right, Advocacy and life skills, counseling management,resourse mobilization and materials developments and documentation through several workshops conducted inside and outside of organization
  • Through workshop and seminars conducted outside the organization, volunteers have gained various skills, ranging from counseling and home-based care to project management and net working with other partners.
  • Classes for peer educators have been implemented, facilitated by volunteers at our local resource centre.
  • The provision of life skills, HIV/AIDS, Drug abuse, environmental conservation and reproductive health education in primary and secondary school has gained significant momentum.
  • It has provided Education and disseminated information on women, youth and children right in the community.
  • It has coordinated activities for AFRICAN FAMILY ACTION PLAN through weekly education sessions.
  • AFAP has providing Nursery school program for Orphan, vulnerable children and children around the resource centre in ILALA Municipality of Dar es salaam region.
  • It participates in special events like international Women’s day, Children day, Uhuru touch, World health day, the day of African child. The Dar es Salaam International trade Fair and annual gender concerts.

Providing Education to masses of people attending this event.

 

  • AFAP has effectively implemented and engaged in policy and advocacy activities to bring about changes in the policy and regulation that had Expelled Pregnant young girls from school.
  • Participates in observing the National Election in 2010 as Local Observer in Coast region.
