The program and Activities of WEETU

 

The legal status of WEETU allows it to operate anywhere in the United Republic of Tanzania, however due to a number of factors including limited resources, WEETU has since its establishment been active in Mvomero District only. The activities implemented and planned for the future are as follows:

1.      In the year 2000, when WEETU was operating as HOCEDSO-WEETU, it implemented a sensitization project to build civil society capacity for active participation in the 2000 General Elections in Tanzania. The focus of the project was to make citizens understand, appreciate and use accordingly their constitutional rights for voting and been voted for. The project was implemented in the whole of Morogoro North Electoral constituency which is currently known as Mvomero District. It was funded by the Basket Fund which was donated by a number of European countries, and it was accessed through the Dar es Salaam Danish Embassy which was coordinating.

 

2.    In 2001 we worked in partnership with a Finnish NGO to implement school health project at Homboza, Lubungo and Yowe villages.

 

3.    In 2002 WEETU supervised the construction work of a school library for Homboza Primary School in Mvomero District.

 

4.    In 2005 WEETU in collaboration with another local NGO Hisani Arts Promotion (HAPRO). This project was funded by a Swedish organization (Forum Syd) and aimed to reduce new HIV transmission in Kilombero and Mvomero districts through training indigenous theatre artists to integrate HIV/AIDS education during their performances for varied purposes.

 

5.    In 2006 WEETU started negotiations with a Finnish Federation of Settlement Youth Association (SETNL) about improving primary school infrastructure in Mvomero District. Successful negotiations led to a partnership agreement to rehabilitate classrooms at Digalama and Peko Misegese primary schools; and construction of a two in one teachers’ house at Yowe primary school, all in Mvomero District. These activities are in good progress. We expect to hand over the projects at Digalama and Peko before the end of year (2008) and finish teachers’ before June 2009.

 

6.    The project ‘Investment in Education’ is been implemented in partnership with a Finnish NGO (ÄDCA). It started in 2008 with two (2) pilot villages (Magali and Msomgozi) and if everything goes well the project will be end in 2010.

 

 

CHAPTER TWO

INVESTMENT IN EDUCATION

 

2.1 Introduction

This project is implemented in partnership between WEETU and ÄDCA. Planning of the project started early in 2002 but couldn’t be implemented until 2008. The objective of the project is to convince people to invest to the education of children, especially girls. The background of the project is the WEETU members’ experience that the community in Morogoro region is not well aware about the importance of investing to the education. The situation is even worse for girls, because it is still a common thought, that after growing up and undergone traditional initiation training, they only need to get married.

 

Because the Morogoro Region is very large, this project has been launched only in two villages that can act as a pilot projects that will give experience and help better the project when it will scale up to other villages. The pilot villages are Magali and Msongozi in Mvomero District. These villages were chosen because in Magali Primary School there has not been a female teacher since 1975 and in the Msongozi Primary school there have never been teachers’ houses since it was opened in 1950.

 

Within the project there are following activities:

 

2.2 Research

WEETU made a base line research together with ÄDCA on parents’, students’ and teachers’ opinion about the main factors affecting the development of education in Mvomero District. This research was made in two above mentioned villages. However, because students passing from these primary schools are expected to join the nearby secondary school of Doma and Melela, the two secondary schools were visited.

 

A team of 6 persons (3 from WEETU and 3 from ÄDCA) visited Magali and Msongozi villages in February 2006, February 2007 and February 2008. The findings of these visits were the following:

-         Lack of teachers (especially female) in Magali Primary School.

-         Lack of water in Melela Secondary School.

-         Lack of teachers’ houses in Doma Secondary School.

-         Poor economical situation among Msongozi, Magali, Melela and Doma villagers.

-         Difficulties in communication between local and district and regional education officials.

 

These main findings that came up during the research are the cornerstone to other project activities. WEETU, ÄDCA and beneficiaries in pilot villages decided together that project should include the following:

-         rehabilitation of  some school buildings

-         capacity building of school committees

-         strengthening communication between teachers and education officials

-         support girls from poor  families of the pilot villages studying in secondary schools

-         starting health clubs in schools

-         improving economical situation of villagers, especially of  those having children in secondary schools but having difficulties in educating them

-         Improving furniture in schools.

 

 

2.3 House Finishing

Mvomero District education resouces are limited so no way we have to to surpot for finishing this teacher’s House!!

                                                        i.            Kufanya mazungumzo na wadau na wafanya maamuzi   kwa maendeleo ya elimu Wilayani

                                                      ii.            Kutembelea taasisi za elimu ya shule ya msingi na Sekondari na kufanya mazungumzo na wadau na watendaji.

B).Kujenga uwezo kwa kamati za shule kwa mafunzo ya utawala bora.

                                                        i.            Kutoa mafunzo juu ya misingi ya utawara bora katika sekta ya Elimu

                                                      ii.            Kujadili nafasi na wajibu wa kamati za shule katika maendeleo ya Elimu

C).Kusaidia wasichana wenye uwezo kimasomo lakini familia zao ni fukara kwa kuwasaidia kwa :-

                                                        i.            Kulipa ada na michango ya shule.

                                                      ii.            Kununua vifaa vya kujifunzia, Kama madaftari peni, vitabu nk

                                                    iii.            Kuwanunulia dawati sare za shule na baiskeli. Na chakula wakati wa njaa.

                                                  iv.            Kutoa mafunzo ya ujasiliamali wazazi tunaosaidia.

D).Kuanzisha mfuko wa elimu wa kijiji.

E).Kuinua miundo mbinu ya shule kama ukarabati, kutoa samani na kumalizia majengo yasiyomalizwa na serikali.

 

KAMPENI YA ELIMU.

A).Kutembelea wadau na wafanya maamuzi kwa maendeleo ya  Elimu na kufanya mijadala juu ya maendeleo ya elimu.

B).Kutoa mafunzo na Kuchapisha vitabu vya Elimu ya Afya shule za msingi.

C).Kufanya mijadala ya ngazi ya vijiji na wilaya kuhusu changamoto za maendeleo ya elimu.

D).Kusaidia uboreshaji wa miundo mbinu na kujenga ikiwemo kujenga kukarabati vyumba vya madarasa na nyumba za walimu.

 PROGRAM YA KUJITOLEA NA UKARABATI NA UJENZI WA MIUNDO MBINU YA SHULE.

        i.            Kuwaandaa vijana wa kujitolea Finland na Tanzania.

      ii.            Kuwandaa wananchi au wanakijiji kuwapokea na kuishi na wanaojitolea

    iii.            Kutengeneza michoro ya ukarabati na ununuzi wa vifaa vya kuishi na ujenzi,

  iv.            Kuhamasisha wananchi kujitolea kuleta vifaa vya uijenzi vinavyopatikana katika mazingira yao.

    v.            Ufuatiliaji wa ujenzi na maisha ya vijana wanaojitolea na kufanya tathimini ya kazi.

 

 

UFUATILIAJI WA MAPATO NA MATUMIZI YA RASILIMALI ZA UMMA (PETS)

        i.            Kutoa uelewa kwa wananchi juu ya nafasi zao kujua mapato na matumizi ya umma katika vijiji vyao.

      ii.            Kujenga uwezo kwa wananchi jinsi ya kufanya kufuatilia mapato na matumizi ya rasilimali za umma (PETS).

    iii.            Kufunya midahalo ya wazi juu ya matokeo ya utafiti katika ngazi ya Tarafa.

 

KUZUIA MAAMBUKIZI MAPYA VVU NA UKIMWI KWA NJIA YA MILA NA DESTURI ZA KIJAMII.

        i.            Kufanya utafiti wa mila na desturi za jamii.

      ii.            Kujenga uwezo wa waalimu wa mila juu ya VVU na ukimwi.

    iii.            Kuwafunza vijana kimila jinsi ya kujikinga na VVU na Ukimwi katika hatua mbalimbali za maambukizi ya VVU naUkimwi

  iv.            Kufanya  maonesho juu ya umuhimu wa elimu ya asili katika kupambana na UKIMWI.

    v.            Mafunzo ya makungwi na wawezeshaji wa mafunzo ya mila kwa vijana.

  vi.            Kuandaa kitini cha mafunzo ya UKIMWI na Mila.
