Organization for Community Development (OCODE) is a Non-Governmental Organization founded in 1999. It was registered in 2003 under Society Ordinance Act of 1954 and complied with NGO Act of 2002 in March 2011.

The organization was established by a group of fifteen Tanzanians of different expertise with the aim of working with the community to address its health problems, particularly regular outbreak of cholera, rampart malaria and HIV/AIDS in Temeke.

In the course of working closely with communities in implementing the CBHC project (Community Based Health Care), it was discovered that the health problems encountered were mainly due to lack of formal education and most children were not attending schools. It was in that respect that the founding members when registering the organization decided to focus on enabling children to go to school as thus address health problems through education. The names of the founding members are Mr. Thomas Langtot (chairperson), Dr. Kristina Lugangira (secretary), Mr. John Kangimba (Treasurer) Mrs Proscovia Mjumba, MS Jesca Kilua, Mr. Robert Mtajwa, SR Mary Mfinanga, Mr. Meshack Kibangayuka, MS Ruth Hamisi, Mr. Leodguard Rumanyika, MS Anna Jovin, MRS Judith John, MRS Pude Abdallah, MRS Flora Rutabanzibwa, and Mr. Eavius Kalemela.

Since 2003 OCODE is implementing a Community Based Education Intervention Program under the partnership of Stromme Foundation (2003 to date) and Intervita Onlus (since 2012 to date). Stromme Foundation is a Norwegian International NGO. Intervita Onlus is an Italian based International NGO with its country office inTanzania(Intervita Tanzania). OCODE under the two partnerships is implementing comprehensive projects which support availability of schools facilities, improving school infrastructure, in-service trainings for teachers and improving school governance. Crosscutting issues of gender and child rights are also being supported. The key aim of the interventions is to enhance education achievement of pupils in the target schools (currently 8: Buza, Kibondemaji, Bwawani, Mtoni Kijichi, Chamazi Kilakala, Kingugi, and Veterinary all in Temeke municipality)

Major Accomplishment:

A: Improved teaching and learning environment in 12 primary schools ofTemekeMunicipality, by acting on empowering of human skills, on infrastructure improvement, on increased availability of teaching & learning tools, on the application of the child rights.

B: Improved governance and participation of 20 school committees, especially on school development.

C: Reached sustainability by involving the Community of all relevant schools and through the responsible participation of the Municipal authorities.
