Civil Society Capacity Strengthening

B. Briefly describe how does your project addresses the KRA selected above.

In this project CODECOZ intends to continue with Awareness Raising program on Environmental management in West District of Zanzibar; the area which is highly devastated by environmental degradation. The project activities will include:-
1. Meetings for community leaders and
2. Open forums for the members of the community of the remaining 29 Shehias of the districts which were not covered in the previous project.

Further more the organisation intends to develop 5 years Strategic Plan which will enhance the organisations capability of performing day to day activities.

255 Community Members of West District in 29 shehias are sensitized on Environmental Management by October 2011.

B. What activities were planned for this quarter as per your Contract?

1. Conduct three 2 days open forum to 255 community members in 29 shehias on environmental management.

2. One day evaluation meeting.

C. Achievements this quarter

1. 226 out 255 targeted participants equal to 87.63% of targeted community members of the designated Shehias attended the forum and actively participated in the deliberations.

2. Made a strong call for the government to speed up the review of National Environment Policy for Zanzibar.

3. They were really moved by the training and many showed readiness to form environmental clubs and groups to tackle environmental problems within their vicinities.

4. Large number of female participated in the forum. the number of female were 118 out of 226 which is equal to 52.2% of total participants

Improved participation of 390 community members on environmenta management in West District in 29 Shehias by October 2011

B. Actual Outcomes/changes

Immedietly interventions on environmental conservation taken by some of commnity members.

C. Other outcomes/changes originated from implementing the project

Increased colaboration and networing between CODECOZ and West District leadership.

1. CODECOZ Chairperson appointed to attend District Food Securiy Commettee.
2. CODECOZ Executive Secretary appointed to be a member of District Development Commettee.

Lessons Learned

Describe any experience and ideas that you obtained from implementing the project

Explanation
Readiness of Community members to actively participate in environmental conservation and protection, but they lack guidance from the authority concerned.
It is important to involve beneficiaries and stakeholders from outside the organisation in the evaluation of the project in order to get wider views and critical analysis of the report.
Involvement of news media during project implementation is important for wider coverage of targted beneficiaries.

Challenges

Describe any challenges encountered in implementing the project and how they were overcome.

Challenge	How it was overcome
Price rise (inflation) of some items such as refreshment and boat fare.	Covered within the budget of other items
Some very important items needed for the exercise such as allowance for Supporting Staff and transport for chief guest, moderator were not budgeted for; This was overlook during budget preparation.	Covered within the budget of other items
