To provide training on environmental conservation to inhabitants of Mlali Ward and carry out a focus group evaluation to see the successfulness of the workshop
In the firstquarter,a total number of 60 people were trained on environmental conservation in Mlali ward at the Ward heardquarters(Mlali) in which case facilitation was done in a participatory manner.Issue of people performing human activities in catchment areas and along river banks were discussed in length and conclusions were reached that by June 2011 all activities in the respective areas should cease.During the session issues of people pretending to have permits of harvesting forest products in the respective villages were discussed and at the end the facilitator who happened to be the Authority in Forest Management in the district gave mandate to the villagers to not allowing anybody harvesting forest products in any of the villages unless they have a letter from him and him alone. It was also an advantage that a callender for tree planting was drawn by the participants and that they should mobilize other villagers in tree planting during the coming rainy season. Two weeks after we held an evaluation session comprising of a focus group of 20 people including leaders of villages and of the ward to see the effectiveness of the workshop.
The only difference that could be noted is that of delay of funds which resulted into the implementation of the project.

The only reason for difference is that of delay in funds disbursement that caused a delay in the project implementation
Lessons Learned
Explanation |
---|
During the implementation and discussions it was learned that people were perfoming human activities in catchment areas and along the river banks without knowing the outcomes. This was adressed properly during the workshop. Moreover it was learned that due to the absence of by-laws governing environmental resources in the whole ward ,people would just come in these villages pretending to have permits from higher authorities and harvest forest product leaving the villagers woundering not knowing what to do. |
Inhabitants, not knowing the outcome would perform human activities in the forests just in order to have their daily bread. In a long discussion, it was learned that having alternative projects which are environmental friendly would concerve the forests and hence the biodiversity as well as alleviating poverty. |
Challenges
Challenge | How it was overcome |
---|---|
This project was supposed to start a year ago.By the time of implementation there already had been changes in all village leadership which caused a number of logistics to change. | Negotiations with new village leaders were to be effected. |
Having known the above, people needed to be enpowered in starting such mentioned project. This was a challenge since FCS does not support such activities for example purchase of materials. | Conclussions were that CMMUT help in the formation of groups in villages and seek appropriate assistance for them to start and run developmental activities which are environmental firendly as well as alleviating poverty looming among families such as making of modern beehives and the like. . |
