The initiative to establish Jumuiya ya Maendeleo yq Jamii na Uhifadhi wa Mazingira Zanzibar (CODECOZ) started way back in 1992. This initiative resulted in the establishment of this CSO in 1995 and registered under the Societies Act No. 6 of 1995 in 1996 with registration No. 20. CODECOZ was established by only 12 founder members that had interest on environmental issues.  Since then membership has been increasing tremendously; now CODECOZ has over 50 members throughout the Islands of Unguja and Pemba. Members include individuals, and other affiliated CBOs and groups interested in environmental issues. CODECOZ has 48 %female members some thing that shows that women are environmental conscious. CODECOZ is ambitious to recruit more members as an on going process.
