What is YES Tanzania

Youth Education Through Sports Tanzania (YES TZ), is a locally registered Non Governmental Organization (Registration number 00004325) based at a head office in Mbeya region and intends to operates across Tanzania mainland. YES TZ will pilot this project in Mbeya region, and findings at the end of the project will help us to decide how we scale up.

Our vision is; A society where by youth have equal opportunity to realize their fullest potential, productively participating in social, economical, political, religious and cultural life without fear or favor. While our mission is; to make every youth a leader, we are working to ensure that every youth have equal access to education, meaningful employment, and opportunity to develop their potential. Our programme build leadership skills, encourage team work, and promote the value of service among youth. We work to encourage youth participation, raise awareness of youth issues and promote youth oriented policy. We invest in Tanzania’s future.

The formation of YES TZ was inspired by various factors but the main one is; the need to see that young people are engaged and are active participants in democracy and governance within their communities. YES TZ intends to ascertain young people participation in local governance and explore how young people can take an active role and responsibilities in improving their lives and their communities.

Despite the rhetoric describing young people as the leaders of tomorrow and despite the many programmes and policies put in place to ensure that young people participate as equal citizens in governance, they remain largely excluded from the mainstreams of economy, civil society and governance.

Tanzanian youth are numerically the majority, but their number due to current structures and negative attitudes towards young people, not being supportive to young people leading developments concepts and beliefs, their number do not mean or give them a cutting age to access into powers.

Youth Education Through Sports Tanzania intends to empower young people and gate keepers to make sure that young people are recognized as significant and valuable resource and push to make sure that young people are integrated into various decision making structures, YES TZ through working with and for young people is determined to make sure that young people’s concerns, perspectives and issues are acted upon.

YES TZ is passionate to see that young people are a force for positive change in the country, without young people empowerment and creating conducive environment which ensures that young people are participating in political, development, and socioeconomic processes, the transformation we are referring to is not likely to happen.

Our belief is that if young people are empowered and are given chances to participate in political, development and socioeconomic processes, the result will be prosperity of our communities and the country at large. We believe that when empowered young people can positively contribute towards democracy and good governance, and hence achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Tanzania development vision 2025, .

What do we intend to do?

YES TZ has been founded in a belief that whatever the social problem facing the community or the country, sports not only provides recreation, but also provides the vehicle by which transformation can happen. That being the case YES TZ intends to use various sports, football, netball, basket ball, volleyball, music, rap, gymnastics etc as a vehicle to attract young people and hence deliver the required messages through capacity building sessions which will be structured accordingly. Sports have great power to change the world, it is a universal language and audience puller.

Sports has the power to change the world, it has the power to unite people, inspire, it speaks to youth in the language they understand, sports can create hope where once there was only despair, it is more powerful than the government, in breaking down racial barriers,” Nelson Mandela
