A one day children stakeholders meeting held at YWCA Moshi 29th June 2012
On June 16th, 2012, White Orange Youth, along with several other groups, celebrated the 11th annual International Day of the African Child. This day serves to commemorate the brave children that took the streets in the 1976 Soweto Uprising in South Africa. Many were wounded and killed fighting to equal education rights for African children. Now, this day is celebrated in order to raise awareness about the importance of children’s rights. This year, the day focused on the rights of African children with disabilities.
White Orange Youth participated in two different events on this day. The first was in Okaoni village and involved taking 40 children and caregivers by bus the rural area. The day was full of performances, speeches, and food! The speeches were given by local group leaders and government officials. Topics included the importance of children’s rights in Moshi, disability rights, and living with HIV/AIDS. Also, several children’s groups performed either a poem or song. WOY also donated ten trees to be planted in the school’s compound. They were planted by local government officials, children, and a reprehensive of WOY. Finally, a good meal was served and the WOY children returned home!
There was also an event held in Moshi town. Some of the WOY children’s groups that meet in the urban areas were able to come. The celebration was similar in that there were performances, speeches, games, and food.
White Orange Youth also designed t-shirts for the event and distributed them to all the WOY children that attended, local government officials, and caregivers. Overall, the day was well-celebrated and a great success!
