Light for the Needy Group is a nongovernmental (NGO) organization in Mwanagati, Ilala, Dar es Salaam, which takes care of vulnerable children and older persons. LNG was formed in 2007 and has been registered in Tanzania in the year 2008 under NGO act No 24 of 2002. The organization was formed with its interest being the mobilization and sensitization mainly of vulnerable children and especially older persons about community development, and children’s welfare, for street children and orphans, and adolescent mothers. After seeing these people always being neglected in different ways and places, i.e., eating from garbage collection, where they meet a lot of risks which lead to death.

The organization places great emphasis on the needy children, older persons and widows as mentioned above, without discrimination as to religion or tribe.

We take care of older persons so as to reduce idleness and disorderly conduct, and reduce begging on the streets where they meet a lot of death risks.LNG has over 3 years of working with Orphans, Vulnerable children and the elders by accommodating them in camps and providing them with all necessary humanitarian requirements such as foodstuff, water clothes, medical care and education.

To help those in the community, particularly those who demonstrate social needs, these people face the most horrible life situation; many of these older people are taking care of orphans after the death of their parents from HIV/AIDS. Sensitization at ward levels with emphasis that these individuals can be brought together and have skills which can help them to have a better life.

Provision of Health, education for both children and older persons – to sensitize them about HIV/AIDS. We have found out that many older persons and widows are still sexually active, and they may contact HIV/AIDS, while thinking it is just for young people. There is a need for effective campaigns on malaria, TB, general weakness, and other diseases. LNG has a committed team of staff with communication and advocacy skill hence we have no doubt that the task will be done effectively for the benefit of our beneficiaries.
