TANZANIA RESOURCE ASSESSMENT CENTRE FOR DISABLED CHILDREN (TRACED)

Tanzania Resource and Assessment Centre for Children with disabilities (TRACED) is a non – governmental organization established by the parents of children with disabilities and professionals in the field of education, health and community development.

Its target groups are cross disability children.

It was registered under the societies Ordinance (Cap.337) in November 1996

Geographical focus

TRACED has a mandate to operate countrywide in mainland Tanzania. However currently it operates in three regions of Dar es Salaam, Iringa and Coast.

Achievements

Since its establishment it has succeeded in registering the following long term impact on children, parents/guardians, community and itself as an organization.

Children

  • 861 identified and screened children in Dar es Salaam, Mufindi and Bagamoyo have been able to perform activities of daily living by themselves such as feeding, walking and toileting
  • Identified children are now publicly exposed by their parents instead of being hidden.
  • 315 pupils and students with disabilities who were provided with mobility gears can now move freely to and from the schools.
  • Two centers for children with disabilities in Isalavanu Mufundi and Bagamoyo have been established.

Parents/guardians

  • Capacity of the parents/guardians to provide proper care and support to their children with disabilities has been enhanced through training in physiotherapy
  • The outreached parents who where ashamed of having a child with disability are no longer ashamed they now freely move with their children
  • 180 parents of children with disabilities who were provided with soft loans in Dar es salaam (30), Mufindi (100) and Bagamoyo (50) region have their incomes and purchasing power increased. Their social and economic status have also been improved.
