 Rais wa Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania, Mheshimiwa Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete amemtumia salamu za rambirambi Mkuu wa Majeshi ya Ulinzi nchini, Jenerali Davis Mwamunyange, kuomboleza kifo cha Luteni Jenerali (Mst) Silas Peter Manyunga kilichotokea alfajiri ya saa 10.30 kuamkia leo katika Hospitali ya Apollo, mjini New Delhi, India. Jenerali Manyunga amefariki akiwa na umri wa miaka 71.
“Nimepokea kwa mshtuko na huzuni habari za kifo cha Jenerali Silas Manyunga. Nilimfahamu binafsi Jenerali Manyuga katika uhai wake. Alikuwa askari hodari wa jeshi letu. Alikuwa kamanda wa kutumainiwa wa ulinzi wa nchi yetu, “amesema Rais Kikwete na kuongeza: “Katika maisha yako yote Jenerali Manyunga alidhihirisha na kuthibitisha uzalendo wake kwa nchi yake na moyo wake wa kujituma kulinda amani, usalama na utaifa wa nchi yetu na taifa letu. Jeshi letu limendokewa na mtu muhimu wa kulipa ushauri wakati ushauri wake ulikuwa bado unahitajika.

Amesema Rais Kikwete: “Nakutumia wewe Jenerali Davis Mwanyunge, Mkuu wa Majeshi ya Ulinzi, salamu za rambirambi za dhati ya moyo wangu kufuatia kifo hicho. Kupitia kwako, nakuomba uwasilishe salamu na pole zangu nyingi kwa familia, ndugu na jamaa wa marehemu kwa kuondokewa na baba, mzazi, mlezi na mpendwa wao. Aidha, napenda kupitia kwako uwasilishe pole zangu kwa wanajeshi wote wa Tanzania kwa kupotelewa na askari mwenzao na Kamanda wao.”
Amesisitiza Mheshimiwa Rais, “ Wajulishe wana-familia ya marehemu na wanajeshi wote wa Tanzania kuwa moyo wangu uko nao katika msiba huu. Huzuni yao ni huzuni yangu. Nawaombea kwa Mwenyezi Mungu, Mwingi wa Rehema, awape moyo wa subira na uvumilivu katika kipindi hiki kigumu cha maombolezo. Yote ni Mapenzi yake na aiweke Peponi Pema Roho ya Marehemu. Ameni.”
Luteni Jenerali Silas Peter Manyunga alizaliwa Maswa, Shinyanga mwaka 1940. Alijiunga na Jeshi la Tanganyika Rifles Januari 10, mwaka 1963, baada ya kumaliza elimu ya sekondari katika Shule ya Sekondari ya Bwiru, Mwanza. Alihitimu kozi ya Uofisa wa Jeshi Julai 26, 1963, nchini Israel, akahitimu kozi ya Unadhimu na Ukamanda wa Jeshi mwaka 1973 nchini Canada na kuhitimu kozi ya Ukamanda wa Juu wa Jeshi mwaka 1974 hapa nchini.
Alipandishwa cheo na kuwa Luteni Jenerali Juni 21, mwaka 1995 na kabla ya kustaafu jeshini Desemba 31, 1995, alipata kuwa Mkurugenzi wa Mafunzo katika Makao Makuu ya Jeshi, Mkurugenzi wa Tawi la Mafunzo Makao Makuu ya Jeshi, Kamanda wa Brigedi ya 202 ya Tabora, na Kamanda wa Divisheni za 20 na 30 za Jeshi la Wananchi wa Tanzania (JWTZ).
Jenerali Manyuga alishiriki kikamilifu Vita Dhidi ya Iddi Amin katika Operesheni Chakaza ambako alikuwa Kamanda wa Brigedi ya 206 na baada ya hapo kuwa Kamanda wa Kikosi Maalum cha JWTZ nchini Uganda kati ya 1979 na 1980.
Mbali na jeshi, Jenerali Manyunga alitumikia umma kama Mkuu wa Mkoa wa Singida mwaka 1977 – 1978, Katibu wa Chama wa Mkoa wa Kilimanjaro 1983-1988, Balozi wa Tanzania katika Nigeria kati ya 1989 hadi 1998 na Balozi wa Tanzania katika DRC kati ya 1998 na 2002 alipostaafu utumishi wa umma.

Lieutenant General Peter Dough Silas was born Maswa, MC, 1940. He joined the Army of the Tanganyika Rifles January 10, 1963, after completing secondary education in Bwiru Secondary School, Mwanza.
