Food insecurity and nutritional status has several effects such as an increased rate of school children an attendances and poor performance, increased in the illiteracy rate, increased risk of HIV infection, increased school girls pregnancies and risk of expelled adolescent girls resorting to prostitution. The CEDO suggests promoting school feeding as a means to improve school children attendance and reduce short-term hunger and improve leaning outcomes and to educate school children and other community members on nutrition to scaling up nutrition in Nzega District.

Food Security

Food security exists when all people, at all times, have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs for an active and health life. Tanzania has structured to ensure food security in the country such as Food Self-Stuffiness Ratio-(SSR) and Strategic Grain Reserve (SGR). The SGR is used to stabilize food prices and to support poor families in the event of food crisis. The SGR through other sectors including agriculture and health takes appropriate measures to address the issues of poverty reduction and community empowerment. This includes prevention of low birth, weight; improve child feeding practices, micronutrient supplementation and salt iodations and capacity building for nutrition interventions and treatment of chronically malnourished children.

The CEDO survey and statistics from Nzega District Agriculture and Livestock office show that food security is insignificant, out of 96 villages, which have about 380,752 residents, 167,678 are faced with a problem of malnutrition.
