BACKGROUND Water Relief and Environmental Conservation (WRECO) is nongovernmental organization established in 2005 by local communities in Tandahimba district aimed to overcome water shortage problems, environmental degradation and community development issues for the meaningful and sustainable development. WRECO was registered in 2012 under the Tanzania Non Governmental Authority and given Registration No. 13NGO/00005531. VISION The organization vision is a Community with access to clean and safe water for meaningful and sustainable development. MISSION The Organization mission is reducing water shortage through utilization of water sources and undertaking environmental conservation by volunteerism spirits for self reliance and sustainable development.
OBJECTIVES 1. To reduce water shortage by encouraging and supporting utilization of water sources and environmental conservation initiatives in the communities. 2. Assisting the communities in their efforts to reduce vulnerability to climate change, identify and priorities adaptation and mitigation responses and where necessary, to help integrate such considerations within a wide range of sectoral interventions and projects. 3. Identifying, initiating, promoting and Contributing to the socio-economic development and environmental friendly activities of the rural and urban communities of Mtwara Region by supporting self-development projects and programmes leading to sustainable development of farm and off-farm activities through participatory methodologies. 4. To promote partnership and sense of collaboration amongst the target groups towards establishment of poverty eradication initiatives on self-help basis. 5. Initiating, encouragement and promoting the use of renewable and sustainable energy sources. 6. Encouraging women and youths to join their efforts by volunteering in environmental conservation and natural resources management as well as enhancing entrepreneurship skills and in promoting guidance and counseling for acquisition of potential skills that will make Mtwara region and Tanzania a better place to live. 7. Promoting education, training and field exposure on water resources, environmental conservation, entrepreneurship skills and behavioral adjustment to the vulnerable Tanzanians especially in rural areas. 8. Encouraging sustainable agriculture, promoting food security and increasing community awareness on effects of shifting cultivation. 9. Supporting community initiatives for Good Governance in Natural Resources Management and Agricultural Development. 10. To promote Networking and cooperation between organizations and agencies (Local and International) of similar objectives and values to strengthen the attainment of the WRECO’s objectives.
Achievements: Since its establishment among other issues, WRECO has achieved to mobilize and encourage community contributing their resources and efforts in conservation of Water Reservoir at Malamba village which is now being used by almost 8 villages surrounding it.
