SUMMARY OF TWCWC PROJECTS

1. WOMEN LEGAL LITERACY TRAINING PROJECT

TWCWC has conducted legal literacy training on the rights to women and children to more than 28 wards in Temeke, Ilala and  Kinondoni districts. The training sessions has covered specific laws that promote women’s and children’s rights and empowering local government systems. Such lessons include:  Inheritance Laws,  Marriage Act 1971, SOSPA 1998, Land Act ,CEDAW, Children rights with CRC, Counseling and Guidance, Court procedures, Will writing, and other related family laws.

The aim of this train was to empower women/widows and protect children/orphans in the community as well as empowering the local government system due to the fact that the local systems has inadequate knowledge on human rights issues related to women and children legal rights.

2. LEGAL AID PROGRAM - TEMEKE WOMEN LEGAL AID CENTRE

TWCWC feels that, the right to representation does not need to be discriminatory.  It should equally apply to poor men and women, children and old people and everyone in criminal as well as in civil matters.  TWCWC intervention in this area is highly needed in order to provide legal aid to the needy.

TWCWC conducts day-to –day legal aid and counseling sessions at Temeke women Legal Aid Centre located at Chang'ombe ward in Temeke district.  Successful approaches from other centers have been applied in order to make this activity successful. Legal aid centre is specifically providing the following services: Social Counseling to children and  women,  Legal Aid services, Mediation and reconciliation, Coaching clients, conduct home visits, Assists clients in drafting legal documents,  Refer cases to different authorities and other related legal service.  TWCWC offers free legal services to the community members

TWCWC strongly believes in women and children empowerment that is why it has started a number of projects for the welfare of women and children. TWCWC and ILO IPEC 2008/2009/10 work in collaboration with the local government authority in supporting the government of Tanzania campaigning against WFCL. The prevalence of child labour is one of the major development challenges facing Tanzania. Therefore the problem of child labour is likely to get worse, in our community if concerted efforts are not taken to address the plight of these children.

5. WOMEN ECONOMIC – ENTREPRENEURSHIP SKILLS AND REVOLVING LOAN SCHEME

Women economic empowerment is part of human rights foundation as far as Tanzania National Strategy on Poverty reduction - MKUKUTA is concern. The organization intends to improve the social and economic situation of the women and specially widows groups’ households in Temeke District, therefore TWCWC initiate this project and conduct entrepreneurship skills training in promoting income-generating activities to widows economic groups. According to experience women in our community are mainly active in informal sector and usually they bear the main responsibility in their families.

Compared with men they are discriminated by traditions and common laws; as they have little or no control over the means of production; their access to social and economic services is made difficult; in general they have little access to employment in the formal sector. When these women become widow the situation become more complicated in terms of handling their economic life as well as taking care of their children

Under this particular project the organization managed to train 120 women on entrepreneurship skills and giving on site advice to their income generating activities. Hence 60 widows are accessing loan revolving fund for their Income generating activities.

6. HIV/AIDS PROGRAM - SCALING UP VCT SERVICES AND RESPONDING TO THE IMPACT OF HIV AND AIDS IN MOSHI RURAL DISTRICT

·        HIV/AIDS is a major challenge to health and development. It is putting a tremendous burden on health care facilities and is decreasing productivity. Voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) is obviously demonstrated to be a key entry point for HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support. Thus, it became obvious that it was essential to harmonize and improve the current situation of the spread of HIV/AIDS in our communities.

·         VCT is increasingly recognized as a central effort to combat the epidemic through prevention and care. Access to ARV therapy is also increasing. Hence % of people who are HIV infected that know their status take advantage of the available therapy thus need for better VCT services. Strategies to promote VCT have focused on increasing access, availability and uptake.

  • TWCWC under is operating a VCT Centre located at  HIMO small township in Moshi Rural district. The main activities implemented within TWCWC - VCT include: Counseling and testing, Provide Home Based Care, Provide nutrition supplements to the needy, Provide education support to identified Orphans living with HIV, monitor clients and make referrals to comprehensive care.
  • Notable Achievement: There has been an increase of clients attending TWCWC HIMO VCT  due to the involvement of community leaders in the previous community mobilization, as well as expanded outreach services to the areas  and Provision of human rights support to the VCT clients. Since in September 2008 TWCWC Himo VCT managed to counsel and testing more than 2000 clients and initiate Post Test Clubs now functioning  with 80 members
