Ushetu Context

Ushetu district newly born from Kahama district is one of the natural resource abundant districts in Shinyanga region. According to the district ranking on education/academic performance among the rural districts, Ushetu is the top most hit in the natural wealthy while on overall examination result it still lags behind with more than 50% of the populations are illiterate and ignorant and most are poor. The major causes of illiterate and ignorant are pupils and students greatly drop out in both primary and secondary schools. Other important cause of pupils and students great drop out from schools are mining activities at Mwabomba farming (crops) and animal husbandry.

Idahina secondary is located 60 km from Kahama town south west bordering by Kigosi-Moyowosi Game Reserve. It is a community based secondary school with very great students drop out the causes being the small mining industry (Mwabomba) and animal husbandry. These two factors contribute greatly to student’s truancy and absenteeism. Students’ truancy is the major obstacle towards academic achievement in the ward. Parents lack ambition to sand or educate their children. Ultimately much of this stems from parents illiteracy and ignorance. This is a direct result of low school enrollment, retention and completion rates and this situation is not currently the focus for any non- government initiative.
