The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) was created in 2006, born of a strategic partnership between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation to dramatically improve African agriculture, and to do so as rapidly as possible.

AGRA was created with one overriding purpose in mind: to catalyze a uniquely African green revolution – one that makes the most of Africa’s natural bounty and the talents of its people; one that is well suited to Africa’s many agro-ecological zones; and one that protects the environment as it sustainably increases the productivity and profitability of millions of smallholder farmers.

AGRA is a truly African organization that is closely involved in local partnerships and global networks, all of which are working to improve African food security, increase agricultural productivity, and reduce rural poverty. Our close ties to smallholder farmers across the continent and our intimate understanding of African agriculture make us a valuable partner. We strengthen and leverage the efforts of others to improve the lives and livelihoods of all Africans, fostering agricultural growth in environmentally sustainable ways.

Vision, Mission and Goals

AGRA's vision is a food secure and prosperous Africa achieved through rapid, sustainable agricultural growth, improving the productivity and livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Africa.

Our Mission is to trigger a uniquely African green revolution that will transform African agriculture into a highly productive, efficient, competitive and sustainable system that assures food security and lifts millions out of povertysi

At AGRA we have three goals to achieve:

  • Reduce food insecurity by 50% in at least 20 countries by 2020.
  • Double incomes of 20 million smallholder families by 2020.
  • At least 15 countries put on pathway for attaining and sustaining a green revolution.
