Civil society has always been a major focus of attention and recipient of European Union aid in Tanzania. The Delegation of the European Union also interacts regularly with a variety of civil society actors. Various initiatives have been undertaken by the EU to support non-state actors in Tanzania by promiting dialogue with the governement, by providing direct supports via grants to civil soicety organsiations and by promoting an open dialogue with Civil society. The Civil society "roadmap process" (and action plan for 2014-2017) provides a startegic framework for EU engagement, and its member states, with civil society in Tanzania. The European Union is funding ZANSASP  (EURO 3 million) as a dedicated programme for civil society in Zanzibar.
