As a science and ICT teacher in Pemba I saw two main problems in science education: 1) The switch to English from Kiswahili in science classes from Primary to Secondary school is very challenging for students. Even good science students from Primary School had trouble when class suddenly switched to English. There is a topic discussing this issue at: http://envaya.org/halima/topic/21483 2) National Exams in Science are extremely difficult in Tanzania. These exams have questions that are often taken from university textbooks from other countries, and the material is far more advanced than for even the best Secondary School science students to handle. This discourages many students from continuing science study. Working to make Science testing better fit appropriate Science education for Secondary School students should be a major goal for Tanzania's education system. |
