Core business areas of SADEF

SADEF has the following main areas of operation. 

(i)            Good Governance

This is the major area of SADEF’s operations. The area includes issues of Accountability, Transparency, Participation and Responsiveness. Within Good Governance, the problem of Corruption is also addressed. Related to Good Governance is Civic Education which includes issues of voters’ education.

(ii)          Environmental Conservation

SADEF is also involved in Environmental Conservation. This was prompted by the fact that the organization is based in the rural areas of Muheza where land degradation is a big issue and it is affecting the lives of Muheza and Tanga region as a whole.

(iii)         Incomes (Poverty Reduction)

The organization is also concerned with the incomes of the rural poor where efforts are needed to raise the standard of living. This is the major area of SADEF’s operations. The area includes issues of Accountability, Transparency, Participation and Responsiveness.

(iv)         Human Rigths and Gender Equality.

Since registration in 2007, SADEF has managed to successfully run the following projects:-                  

(a) Forestation and Economic project.

This was the first project to be undertaken by SADEF after its registration. The project was carried out in 2008 in rural villages of Muheza District and involved planting of trees with multiple purposes: environmental conservation and future income generation through the sale of timber from the harvested trees. This project was funded by Friends of Tanzania (FOT), an American NGO.

(b) Good Governance and Economic Development – Phase1, Misalai Ward, Muheza District

It was carried out in 2009 involving the training of village leaders in Good Governance and Economic Development. It was funded by the Foundation for Civil Society.

(c) Good Governance and Economic Development – Phase 2, Kisiwani Ward, Muheza District

This project was executed and completed in January, 2010 and was similar to the one carried out in 2009. It was funded by the Facility for Ethics, Accountability and Transparency (FEAT).

(d) Capacity building to SADEF members in Muheza District.

This project was executed in December 2010. It enabled the participating SADEF members to learn basic issues in running a non- governmental organization and to participate in the initial stages of preparing the SADEF strategic plan for 2011-2015. The project was funded by The Foundation Civil Society.

(e) Corruption Perception Survey.

In collaboration with Concern for Development Initiatives in Africa (ForDIA), another Non_Governmental Organisation, SADEF participated in a corruption perception survey which was implemented in two phases. The first phase was conducted in 2009 in Rufiji, Mkuranga and Kisarawe districts of Coast region. The second phase of the project was implemented in 2010 covering the districts of Muheza, Pangani, Korogwe, Lushoto, Tanga Urban, Mkinga and Kilindi districts, all of Tanga region funded by The Foundation Civil Society

(f) Voters’ Education Training.

Again in collaboration with ForDIA, SADEF participated in a voters’ education training project in the districts of Lushoto, Muheza, Tanga Urban, Mkinga and Korogwe districts. The project was executed in 2010 in advance of the October 2010 General Elections funded by UNDP (United National Development Programme).

(g) Ward Tribunals.

The Ward Tribunals project started in 2012 and ended in 2014. The projected was implemented by SADEF and was funded by the Foundation for Civil Society. The project targeted members of ward tribunals in Muheza district. The members were given skills to enable them perform their responsibilities properly in resolving cases falling under their jurisdictions.

(h) SADEF INCOME GENERATION THROUGH BEEKEEPING PROJECT.

The project aimed at buying 100 modern beehives in order to increase income collected from the beekeeping project could be used to educated the society concerning the significance or advantage of engaging themselves on such project, and also paying school fees for secondary school students who are   orphans or those who are at risk, also to spend some amount of money / income in organization day to day activities.

The project funded by Friends of Tanzania (FOT) from USA.

 

(i) Youth to Youth Fund (Beekeeping Project)

The project is to enable youth to establish businesses based on biodiversity conservation. It involves training in entrepreneurial skills and beekeeping. The beneficiaries of the project were Youth’s from Mbomole Ward of Muheza District. The project is to impact skills which will enable the establishment of businesses (Self employment) utilizing locally available free natural resources thereby avoiding huge capital requirements.

This project were executed from 2013-2014 which funded by International Labor Organization (ILO).

(j)    WEKEZA Project (Child Labor Awareness Raising).

The Child Labor Awareness Raising project in Kwafungo, Mtindiro and Songa wards of Muheza district in Tanga region (June-November 2015) was being implemented by Sakale Development Foundation (SADEF). The project was funded by USDOL through FCS. In year 2015,SADEF implementing the project under WEKEZA program for two quarters. The first quarter began in June and ended in August while the second quarter covered the three months of September, October and November 2015.

Project objective

The project aimed at preventing child labor through raising the community’s understanding of the negative effects of child labor and the importance of education.

The objective was to be achieved through the following means:

  • Training households
  • Training youth behavioral agents
  • Drama performances
  • Child Rights Clubs in schools
  • Village leaders dialogues
  • Talking walls
  • Door to door sensitization campaigns
  • Public rallies
