The Informed Rural Society [IRS] is a joint fruit of six founder members who wanted to realize their dream of a society that is well informed and engaging effectively and efficiently in their socio-economic endeavor. As a result of their pursuit, IRS was formally established as an NGO under the Companies Act, 2002 in August, 2003.

The core mission was to disseminate information especially to the rural community in order to bridge the information gap between the rural and the urban. Later on the team of members realised that the question of lack of access to information cannot be separated by the issues of human rights and development. That is lack of access to information is a part and parcel of the human rights and development issues. This prompted the change in philosophy of the organization.

The new change in philosophy embraced human rights and developemnt as its core themes. Following the change in the Organization's philosophy in 2008 we restated our mission and adopted this new vision instead of the older mission as follows:

A society characterized by sustainable development and that respects human rights and dignity.

The change in our vision necessitated the change in our mission as well. Our mission now is:

To facilitate participatory community development and relief work by empowering poor and marginalized people and enabling them protect and assert their rights.

To align the Organization's activities with the Organization's vision and mission we ammended the objectives of the Organization which required ammendment of our Organization's Constitution to effect the changes.

Since its inception the organization has implemented projects in child rights advocacy, human rights and voters education.
