Land use conflicts and poor cooking energy strategy endanger the REDD+ intervention in Zanzibar

HIMA piloting REDD project in Zanzibar is being implimented by CARE-Tanzania, Department of Forest and Non-renewable natural resources, Department of Environment (DoE) and umbrella NGOs of JECA, SEDCA and NGENARECO. The project aim to to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and degradation inZanzibar, and generate carbon income which will provide direct and equitable incentives to communities to conserve forests sustainably. More specifically the project aims to promote a pro-poor gender-equitable approach to community forest management in Zanzibar, including piloting of carbon financing for Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD), which provides forest-dependent communities with secure property rights, equitable rewards for providing ecosystem services and other livelihood benefits, and which informs the priorities of Zanzibar in national REDD strategy.
